Bistro code is a simplified subset of HTML. It lets you make your messages more useful by adding:
url hyperlinks
email
links
text styles:
boldface and italics
bulleted lists
images
quotes
code
You can use HTML, of course, to add those features and more. But if you mess up the HTML code, it may mess up every message in that thread. Thus, the Bistro proprietors have decided to forbid HTML in Bistro messages.
you don't
have to worry about messing up anyone else's messages
it's not as complicated
as HTML
it has
only the half dozen features below
However, that half dozen should handle 99% of your needs. Please let us know about the 1%. The best way to learn is to give it a try. Don't miss the tips section at the end.
url links | email links | text styles | bullets and lists | images | quotes | code
The best thing to do is to try this code in your own messages. You can use one of the "just testing" topics. Remember that you can always edit your message if it doesn't look right.
You can add a hyperlink to your message in three different ways.
http://RicciStreet.net/index.html
It can have both the http:// and the www, but it must have one of them in order to be clickable upon display. For most web addresses, the www is optional but it will never be wrong.
[url]http://RicciStreet.net/index.html[/url]
The tags for Bistro code are in blue. In this example, the tags will not appear in your message. The URL between the code will appear, however, and it will be hot.
[url=http://RicciStreet.net/gizmos/index.html]great
educational site[/url]
or
[url=RicciStreet.net/gizmos/index.html]great
educational site[/url]
The
http:// part is optional. In both cases, the phrase "great educational
site" will be hot and the URL won't appear on the page. Both links will
take you to the same page, however.
The
linked page will open in a new browser window when someone clicks on it.
You can add a hyperlinked email address to your message by tagging the email address. The tags for Bistro code are in blue.
[email]doug@toLearn.net[/email]
In this example, the tags will not appear in your message. The URL between the tag pair will appear, however.
Clicking
will open an email window depending on how you have set your browser's
preferences (Netscape Navigator) or options (Microsoft Internet Explorer)
If you
are using an AOL connection but browsing with either Navigator or Explorer,
you'll have to use AOL's email client and copy-and-paste the email address. Copy
the email address by highlighting it and pressing CTRL-C and then paste it into
the email client by pressing CTRL-V.
You can italicize text or make it bold by tagging the text with either the [b] [/b] or [i] [/i] tags. The tags for Bistro code are in blue.
Hello, [i]Mary[/i]
Hello, [b]James[/b]
In this example, the tags will not appear in your message. The text between the tag pair will appear, however, as either italics or bold.
If you want to use both styles, you can nest them in either order, the bold inside the italics or the italics inside the bold.
You can make two kinds of bulleted lists or ordered lists (by number or letter). The tags for Bistro code are in blue.
[list]
[*] The first bulleted item.
[*] The second bulleted item.
[/list]
This produces:
The first bulleted item.
The second bulleted item.
Note that you must include a closing [/list] when you end each list.
[LIST=A] will produce a list from A to Z. [LIST=1]will produce a numbered list.
[list=1]
[*] The first numbered item.
[*] The second numbered item.
[/list]
This produces:
The first numbered item.
The second numbered item.
You can add an image or graphic to your message by tagging the URL of the image file. The tags for Bistro code are in blue.
[img]http://RicciStreet.net/images/mrr15.gif[/img]
In this example, the tags will not appear in your message. The image called between the tag pair will appear, however.
The "http://" part of the URL is required for the [img] code.
You can include specific words from someone else's message in your own. This feature is especially useful to avoid misunderstanding or to reference a message earlier in the thread. Copy and paste the text you want to quote by highlighting it and pressing CTRL-C and then paste it into the Bistro's reply window by pressing CTRL-V. Finally, tag it as you have for the other features. The tags for Bistro code are in blue.
[QUOTE]Fourscore and seven years ago, our continent brought forth a new nation ...[/QUOTE]
In this example, the tags will not appear in your message. The words between the tag pair will appear, however, in blockquotes.
Sometimes you want to include examples of computer code in your messages. However, you don't want the browser to treat it as code, which means to bury and obey it. Instead, you want it displayed intact as an example.
[CODE]<link rel="StyleSheet" href="../images/riccigreen.css" type="text/css">[/CODE]
The tags for Bistro code are in blue. Here, the Bistro code will automatically blockquote the text and preserve its formatting.
1) Don't use both HTML and Bistro code to do the same thing.
2) Bistro code is not case-sensitive.
[URL] is the same as [url] or [uRl].
3) The tags always come in pairs, one opening and one closing.
4) Be careful of spaces between the bracketed code and the text you are applying the code to.
[url] www.RicciStreet.net [/url] won't work
[url]www.RicciStreet.net[/url] will work
5) The closing tag must include a forward slash
[email]doug@toLearn.net[email] won't work
[email]doug@toLearn.net[/email] will work
Bistro code was developed as UBB code by the good folks at Infopop Corporation (formerly Madrona Park, Inc.), 1998-1999. My thanks to them.
